History of Map Making – Gallery Talk

Collector Mark Cohegen will discuss the history of map making with a tour of his exhibition “My Head is a Map”, on view through April 20th.
Mark Cohagen collecting and studying antique maps for 40 years. Besides collecting maps, Mark has also assisted the National Library of Iceland with several of their exhibitions, and has written on the history of the cartography of Iceland. This exhibition contains more than 40 maps spanning almost 400 years, from town plans and curiosities, to the cartographic development of Iceland. There’s a woodcut view of Bohemia from Hartmann Schedel’s Nuremburg Chronical; Bunting’s map of Saint Paul’s journey to Rome; a portion of the Puetinger Roman road map; a fabled island from the Zeno brothers’ expedition to the north in 1380; the Mississippi Bubble fools cap map, and Jorus “ the one-legged” Carolus’ map of Iceland published by Jodicus Hondius.
