October 19, 2017 @ 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The Hodge Memorial Library: Celebrating 80 Years

Retired Trinity College professor Eugene Leach will present “Governor Wilbur Cross in Depression Connecticut:  New Deal or Re-shuffle”?  on October 19. Although now remembered mostly because of a highway named after him, Wilbur Cross was an English professor and literary critic who was elected to the governorship after retiring from Yale. A Democrat, Cross served for four two-year terms, from January 7, 1931 to January 4, 1939. He is credited with passage of several items of reform legislation during his tenure of governor, including measures related to the abolition of child labor, the instituting of a minimum wage rate, legislation that authorized governmental reorganization, and improved factory laws. Cross also endorsed legislation that authorized funding for the rebuilding of the Connecticut State College.
