Developments in fashion will be the topic of Susan Jerome’s lecture on October 12. The 1930s were an interesting and contradictory time – the Great Depression combined with people scraping together a nickel every few weeks to go see a movie that reflected glamour and elegance. Hollywood’s impact on fashion from celebrities really began at this time. Women fantasized about dressing like Jean Harlow or Norma Shearer while using feed sacks to make dresses.
