Art Opening Reception: Charlotte Honda

March 2 @ 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

“Time – Space”

oil and mixed media on canvas

Throughout her professional career, Charlotte Honda’s medium was movement. Modern dance, choreography, movement pattern analysis, and teaching provided her primary focus pastiche professionally. And yet, “Visual arts were always part of my life,” she says. Artistically, she worked with collage, using the summer hiatus between semesters to explore that medium. When she retired, she finally found the time to explore other artistic expressions in watercolors and pastels. But it was oil painting that truly opened up a new world.

Through many teachers – including Robert Alberetti and, most recently, Ira Barkoff—teaching through the Washington Art Association—she has found her own means of expression. Uniquely, Honda has developed a style that brings abstract geometric form and collage dramatically onto the canvas. “It’s a coming together of all experiences,” she explains. To describe the process, Charlotte Honda quotes Agnes Pelton (1881-1961) a transcendental artist who encapsulated her art as “an inner realm rather than an outer landscape.” Honda has found a

similar pathway to her compositions, “I don’t look outwardly. Instead, I look inwardly,” she says. Regardless of her medium, her creative effort is inspired and influenced by texture and color, stillness and spatial relationships. But look closely, and her roots are apparent. Hidden within each composition is the expression of movement, captured on canvas.
