We welcome back Musicologist Gil Harel as he discusses the popular musical, Hamilton. Lin Manuel Miranda’s blockbuster musical has been celebrated as one of the most popular musicals of the modern era. Perhaps this popularity can be attributed to the vibrant cornucopia of musical styles in the score, including traditional musical theater, hip-hop, gospel, jazz, and more. On the surface, Hamilton is a period drama that presents a dramatized retelling of early American history. Such content is unusual in musical theater, and while there are examples (Les Miserables), it had tended to be the exception rather than the rule. During this virtual program, Professor Gil Harel will discuss the show, and through a combination of score and prose analysis, demonstrate why the musical is so compelling.
